Woodpeckers

What a great first week year 6 had! Everyone has been very mature in their attitude towards their learning.

We have been thinking about the qualities of WOODPECKERS (as this is our class name for the year) and we have been applying some of the attributes we've observed to ourselves.

Here's the list that we came up with:

1. TALENTED - They can curl their tongue around their heads.  So what can we do?

2. UNIQUE - There are about 210 different species of woodpeckers.  Each are different or special in some way.  So are we!

3. CO-OPERATION - Male and female woodpeckers work together to carve the cavity for their nests. In year 6 we work as a TEAM.

4. CONFIDENCE - They have a rolling call to show their presence - We have a class motto/chant (we might even sing it!)

5. PLANNING A PATH - Woodpeckers know their way to get to where they need to be, they choose their path to take.  This year we will be mapping our route to get to where we want to go.

6. PERSEVERANCE - It takes a woodpecker a few days to peck out a cavity in a tree but they don't give up. Will we be like this with our work this year?

7. RESOURCEFUL - When a woodpecker finds an empty cavity, they will reuse it instead of making a new one from scratch. We can make choices like this by thinking about the things in our environment that we can recycle and use again.

8. HEALTHY DIET - Woodepeckers eat a wide and varied diet and this is what we are aiming for too.

9. INDEPENDENCE - Eventually the young woodpeckers leave their nests and have to learn to fend for themselves.  At the end of this year we will be leaving Howes and moving on to our new schools.
